Dress Down with the Dawgs
About
I was elected to be the President of Extra Special People at UGA in May of 2019 after serving one year on the executive board as Marketing Chair. After interviewing potential candidates to join my team, I settled on seven other executive members to serve alongside me in fulfilling our mission. The work started immediately, with our main focus shifting to the Dress Down for the Dawgs campaign. Instead of traditionally dressing up as is SEC football game-day tradition, people are challenged to dress down to show their support for individuals with Down syndrome.
As President, my goal was to initiate partnerships across campus. My first meeting was with The University of Georgia’s Student Government Association’s Legislators from the Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Following our meeting, we had a new plan to make the second year of the Dress Down campaign a success.
We reached out to the University of South Carolina’s Student Government Association to form the first ever SEC partnership where two school’s SGA’s signed identical proclamations in support of one cause. We called it, “Dress Down with the Dawgs” for the UGA vs. USC game on October 12, 2019.
UGA Proclamation
The official proclamation was signed on October 1st, 2019. "The purpose of this Proclamation is to garner support from the University of Georgia student body and Bulldog community in recognition and support of students with Down Syndrome and disabilities. Through this Proclamation, the University of Georgia Student Government Association and the University of South Carolina Student Government will partner to encourage students, faculty, and staff, and fans, to Dress Down for the October 12, 2019 home football game against the University of South Carolina."
USC Proclamation
The University of South Carolina Student Government Association signed their proclamation on October 3rd, 2019 to encourage their students to Dress Down at the game vs. UGA. To further promote the partnership, both school’s SGA’s came together with us to film a promo leading up to the game.

UGA Homecoming
For the second year in a row, we got first place in the UGA Homecoming red division with our theme: “Dress Downtown for the Dawgs”. It was a huge accomplishment and a great night celebrating all that Dress Down was able to bring people’s attention to.
After football season
Tailgate Georgia pressed custom Dress Down t-shirts in store. After football season, Tailgate inited us to their store to be awarded a $5,000 check from the AEO Foundation for the work we did through Dress Down.
Reflection
I worked the hardest I’ve ever worked on this project. I’m so incredibly proud of what we were able to accomplish and I am so grateful for the incredible people I got to work with. I can’t think of a better way to showcase how dedicated and passionate I am behind projects I believe in.
And if you remember the 2019 UGA vs. USC game, UGA went into overtime and ultimately lost. And it was at this game that I made my first debut on national television and became a meme across Twitter:
#DressDownwiththeDawgs!!!
